diverse, readable excerpts August 28, 2008
Many of the excerpts in this book hail from millenia past. The book starts with authors, usually unknown, in Mesopotamia. Wry readers might smirk that this region corresponds to modern Iraq, and that its present travails are a far cry from this august heritage. br /br /Naturally, we also see writings from Egypt, like Akhenaton's Hymn to the Aton. Closer to home for some European readers is Herodotus' account in his Histories of the customs of the Persians. Followed by Sophocles' Antigone. Unlike many of the excerpted narratives, the latter is actually still read in its entirety by some students of history. br /br /The diversity of sources is commendable. The excerpts are typically quite readable and should pique the interest of students. Some excerpts tell of events in such a way that the reader might well want a far more detailed account. Which I suppose is the point of this book.
