Product Description Voted one of Christianity Today's 1995 Books of the Year!To understand and apply the Bible well, you need two crucial sources of information. One is the Bible itself. The other is an understanding of the cultural background of the passage you're reading.Only with the background can you grasp the author's original concerns and purposes. This unique commentary provides, in verse-by-verse format, the crucial cultural background you need for responsible--and richer--Bible study. It includes a glossary of cultural terms and important historical figures, maps and charts, up-to-date bibliographies, and introductory essays about cultural background information for each book of the New Testament.Based on ten years of in-depth study, this accessible and bestselling commentary is valuable for pastors in sermon preparation, for Sunday-school and other church teachers as they build lessons, for missionaries concerned not to import their own cultural biases into the Bible, for college and seminary students in classroom assignments, and for everyday Bible readers seeking to deepen and enhance their study of Scripture.

The Greatest! June 19, 2008 This is the single greatest Bible study tool I have ever came across! Keener makes scholarly information available to anyone who can read. I would recommend every believer to own a copy!
IVP New Testament Bible Background Commentary June 18, 2008 This book is outstanding it's very detailed, well-organized and great quality. The commentaries are well researched, easy to read and understand. A must have for anyone interested in bible study.
useful both for preaching and personal devotions March 30, 2008 This book has been an excellent resource for me both in my personal Bible reading and in preparing sermons.
The first sermon I ever gave was directly informed by the historical information I learned about from this book.
It really illuminates the historical background for all the verses in the New Testament.
Informative and Accessible January 19, 2008 I have taken a course with Dr. Keener, and his passion shines through in this book. I have never met someone who works harder than he does. It is big, but it is not a difficult read. If you are looking for answers, you will find them here. Want to know why the signs in John are so important (and it is "signs" rather than "miracles" in John for a reason), you will know. If you want to know the significance of the numbers and churches in Revelation, you will know.
Excellent January 9, 2008 This is a helpful resource in helping to understand who the Bible text is written to. By understanding the historical background, you can interpret the scriptures accurately.
